What is a work permit?
In order to work in Canada, the foreign national needs a work permit. However, there are circumstances that you may be able to work in Canada without a work permit.
There are 2 types of work permit: open work permits and employer specific work permits
Open work permit allows you work for any employer in Canada except those

  • Who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions OR

  • Who offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages

  • The most common example is the post graduate work permit (PGWP)

Closed work permit: often called employer specific work permit. An employer specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions set out on your work
permit such as the following:

  • The name of the employer the applicant is allowed to work for

  • How long the applicant can work

  • The location where the applicant can work

  • The most common example is LMIA work permit
